Boeing 737 tests at Queenstown
Welllngton reporter Trials are being conducted by the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport on landing bigger aircraft at Queenstown. Departmental officers, Air New Zealand, and the Queenstown Airport Authority are jointly evaluating all aspects of using a Boeing 737.
Air New Zealand has not yet formally applied for approval of its operating procedures and the Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr Prebble, said it was not expected to do so until the evaluation was com-
pleted. He said Air New Zealand was not yet firmly committed. Although the runway would not need to be lengthened for Boeing 737 s some changes to the airport layout would be needed. Mr Prebble said the more significant difficulties under study included the effect of aircraft noise on nearby residents, establishing safe procedures clear of the mountainous terrain surrounding the airport, and commercial viability in the light of probable high costs of establishment.
