Actor’s suit upheld

NZPA-AP Los Angeles A Los Angeles judge has upheld Raquel Welch’s SUSIO.B million ($21.7 million) damages awarded in her lawsuit against Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for firing her from the movie, “Cannery Row.”

The judge rejected an M.G.M. lawyer’s argument that the damages were

outrageous and excessive and were not supported by the evidence. The jury in June award Miss Welch $U57.65 million ($15.3 million) in punitive damages; the rest

of the award stemmed from actual damages, such as loss of income. She had sued for SUS2O million, ($40.2 million), contending that a former M.G.M. executive, David Begelman, a producer, Michael Phillips, and a director, David Ward, had plotted to remove her

from the film so they could replace her with Debra Winger. ’

The jury assesssed $U527,500 ($55,275) in damages against Mr Beglman and $U5694,444 ($1,395,830) against Mr Phillips, but none against Mr Ward. .<
