Seven charged after raids
Four men and three women will face charges in the District Court today after the police raided 14 houses in Halswell yesterday morning. More than 30 police were involved in the raids, which netted firearms, drugs, and stolen property. Chief Inspector Graham Clewer, who headed the police action, said those arrested would charges related to the
possession of cannabis, stolen property, and illegal firearms. Most of the houses raided were in Rowley Avenue, Halswell. Mr Clewer said the police had received information that a number of persons in the area were involved in illegal activities. It was felt that the best way to counter it would be to search a number of houses at the same time.
The police action started about 8 a.m. and finished about noon. Some persons were taken to the Christchurch Central Police Station for questioning. Mr Clewer said the police had seized some cannabis, a quantity of stolen property, and three firearms, including a .303 calibre rifle, a sawn-off shotgun, and a cut-down .22 calibre rifle.
