‘Nicky’ blessed in Chch
After a series of mystical rites — swinging a pendulum, a bell, clicking a clacker, blowing a horn and lighting a few sparklers — “Nicky” was blessed. The Wizard was one of several dignitaries to welcome the 7m tar-stained edifice to. Christchurch. The ceremony marked the start of the publicity campaign for the Great New Zealand Smoke-Free Week in Christchurch. Smokers were reminded that the smokefree week — from June 30 to July 6 — was not an anti-smoking campaign but was aimed at supporting the thousands of smokers trying to give up. The campaign’s programme director, Mr Laurie Dee, said that of 500 teenagers introduced to smoking each week, 25 would die from a smokerrelated disease. There will be reminders of smokers’ kits, sponsorship and adoption forms, education programmes in schools and activities at Linwood City, during the campaign weeks.
