Surprise squash win by H.S.O.B.
High School Old Boys had a surprise win over Christchurch in the latest round of the Skellerup Sport Star men’s open grade inter-club squash competition on Tuesday evening. Lawrence Skurr, John MacKinlay and Scott Mitchell all prevailed in five games over their Christchurch opponents to secure a clean sweep for the little-fancied team. In the Blank Trophy round, Christchurch was placed third out of eight teams, while Old Boys barely survived relegation. Now, with four weeks
remaining in the Wilson Shield round, Old Boys already has as many points at it managed in the whole of the other competition. For Christchurch, Wayne Seebeck held match ball at 8-3 in the fifth game of his contest with MacKinlay, and Fred Williams had a match ball in the fourth game against Mitchell. Meanwhile the Blank Trophy winner, Burnside, has extended its secondround lead to four points by taking the maximum reward against Linwood. At No. 1, though, Mark Crosbie had a five-set
battle with Craig Hibbert before shading his rival. In the women’s open grade competition Mount Pleasant extracted its fourth 10-pointer on end and, as it did last week, all the matches were 3-0 affairs.
Christchurch I’s Agnes Huriwai was a trifle unlucky to lose her clash with Donna Church (Linwood) after holding three match balls at 8-5 in the fifth.
Ann Harliwich (Mount Pleasant) and Justine Marriott (Sumner) maintained their perfect records.
