Police drop height tag

NZPA Sydney The New South Wales police have abolished the minimum height required to join the force, making it one of the few in the world where people of any size may apply. It is part of a drive to overhaul police recruitment and lift the standard of the State’s police force, and is expected to open the way for more members of migrant communities, particularly Asians, to join the force.

Until this week men had to be at least 174 cm (sft to join the police and women 163 cm ,(sft 6in). But now height will not be a factor, although the Police Minister, Mr George Paciullo, said shorter applicants would have to demonstrate “their physical capacity for effectively dealing with the demands of operational policing.” A New Zealand police spokesman in Sydney said the minimum height requirement for the New

Zealand police was 173 cm for men and 165 cm for women. Mr Paciullo said the < police force had denied itself valuable expertise from the community because of the height requirement, and its abolition would allow people with a variety of skills to join the force. As well, the police would actively seek out tertiary graduates from universities and colleges of advanced education
