Rescue commended
The role of the L.P.G. tanker Tarihiko In rescuing 356 passengers and crew from the Mikhail Lermontov before she sank on February 16 was marked in a ceremony at Lyttelton yesterday. The chairman of the New Zealand line, Mr Michael Hirschfeld, presented the master, Captain John Reedman, his officers and crew with a commemorative plaque which will be installed in the vessel’s bridge. “Thanks to Captain Reedman’s initiative and
judgment the Tarihiko had been able to carry out a timely and massive rescue to which every person in the crew contributed,” said Mr Hirschfeld. The Tarihiko picked up the passengers and crew when the Russian liner sank in Gore Bay on the evening of February 16. Mr Hirschfeld said the Tarihiko had been told three times that she was not required but because Captain Reedman felt uneasy he continued towards the sinking liner.
