Roma ban review

NZPA-Reuter Berne The European Football Union (U.E.F.A.) said yesterday it would review its sanctions against AS Roma at a meeting of its appeals board in Zurich early next month. Roma, U.E.F.A. said, had lodged a formal appeal against the measures imposed for an alleged attempt by its club president, Mr Dino Viola, to bribe the referee in the European Cup semi-final match against Dundee United, of Scotland, in April 1984.

Roma was banned from next season’s U.E.F.A. club competitions, and Mr Viola barred from all official U.E.F.A. functions for four years. Roma has qualified for this year’s Cup Winners’ Cup competition, but U.E.F.A. said Sampdoria, as runner-up in the Italian Cup, would not automatically replace Roma if the appeal was rejected. First U.E.F.A. would have to consider any such recommendation from the Italian Football Association.
