Big yardings, but beef and lamb prices hold up

Bee! and lamb prices help up well at the Addington market yesterday in spite of big yardings of stock. The yarding of almost 2500 lambs was the biggest of the season. Lean ram lambs continued to attract a healthy price premium above ewe iambs, many of which were overfat. Prime cattle were easy to sell and the store pig market continued to strengthen. Prime lambs Because of a big yarding, the lamb sale started cautiously and early prices were slightly lower than last week’s. But with the advent of outside competition, the demand picked up and prices improved to be fully firm. Big-framed, lean ram lambs easily had the best of the sale, making $l6 to $lB, with the tops reaching $22.20. Much of the yarding, however, was made up of overfat ewe lambs selling between $8 and $l2. The yarding was almost 2500 compared with 695 last week. Values were:— Heavy lambs, to $l9, with some sales to $22.20. Medium lambs, $l2 to $l4. Light lambs, $9 to $ll. Sales included: — D. W. and I. D. Syme (Darfield), 21 at $10.40 to $l4; R. A big yarding of 360 cattle was relatively easy to sell to a buying gallery of butchers and processing company buyers. The over-all strength of the buying power was a feature of the market Demand eased slightly — particularly for heifers — in the closing stages, but most prime beef sold steadily at 160 c to 170 c per kilogram. Heavy steers attracted the most interest and several sold between $5BO and $760. The top price of $760 was paid for a big Simmental cross steer from R. D. and A. E. Parkinson, of Tai Tapu. These vendors sold a total of six Simmental cross steers between $594 and $760. A Hereford-Friesian cross heifer from C. O. McDonald, Ohoka, headed the heifer section at $450, and Angus cows from P. Most Friesian bulls sold between $32 and $7O, Friesian heifers were $27 to $42, beef cross bulls $66 to $B2, and beef cross heifers at $42 to $6O.

Dairy cows Six spring calving Friesian heifers made $325 in the dairy cow section. Other dairy cow sales included a Friesian cow and calf at $405. Store cattle The store cattle sale attracted a healthy amount of interest from farmers in spite of the traditionally quiet midwinter period. The yarding' of about 200 head of cattle ranged from calves to adult steers and heifers. A line of 31 Hereford steer calves from S. G. Rutherford, Culverden, sold at $l4B to $2lB and 53 heifer calves made $132 to $l7O. Fifty 18-month-old Angus and Angus cross heifers from Te Rapa Farm, Ward, made $274 to $290. Store sheep Very few good quality sheep were offered in the store sheep sale. Most mated adult ewe prices ranged from 80c to $5, with an exception being $11.40 for a pen of heavily woolled Coopworths. Among sales of lambs were 439 shorn lambs from E. J. and K. M. Henderson, Cheviot, at $6.50 to $7.90, and 211 woolly Corriedale ewe lambs from Tevlotdale Farm, Amberley, at $9.80 to $10.20. Prime pigs The quality of a big yarding of prime pigs was mixed. Good pigs were keenly sought and reached $152, but poorer, overfat stock was much harder to sell. A big yarding of good quality choppers had another excellent sale and very few good-cutting pigs sold for less than $lOO. Values were:— Light pork, $B5 to $95. Medium to heavy pork, $lOO to $llO. Light to medium bacon, $ll2 to $l3O. Heavy bacon, to $152. Light choppers, $9O to $llO. Heavy choppers, $l2O to $l5O. Store pigs All types of store pigs were easy to sell and the store market overall was firm. Very few pigs in a big yarding of mixed quality stock sold for less than $4O and most weaners made $42 to $5O. In a good sale for breeding stock, in-pig sows reached $235. Values were:— Small weaners, $3O to $37. Good weaners, $4O to $5O. Slips and small stores, $52 to $65. Large stores, to $7B.
