Wayne Smith to play in Italy?
The Canterbury All Black, and Cavaliers first five-eighths, Wayne Smith, might play rugby in Italy later this year. The Canterbury Rugby Union gave permission last evening, subject to dates being provided, for Smith to play in Italy. He said he would be away about nine months. Once the dates are given, Smith’s application will go to the New Zealand Rugby Union for its approval. Smith later told “The Press” that he had been in contact with the Casalle club; near Venice, which was interested in having him for a season. “It is just a possibility at this stage, but if I do go it
will probably be in August or September and my family will go with me,” he said. “The first thing I have to do is to see if I can get a clearance and then I would have to talk to my employer more fully about the matter. It would just be an off-season stay.” Smith said his days as an All Black were definitely over, and there was no possibility of his being available for Canterbury this season. “All I am interested in now is playing club rugby, and this I would like to do for two or three years. Then I want to get into coaching,” he said.
