Sri Lanka
Sir, —You recently printed a long letter from two Sri Lankans living in Invercargill who were concerned to rebut Sister Elizabeth Mackie’s article of May 16 about the island’s present troubles. The current issue (May 9) of a popular American news magazine takes its cover and main news story from the Sri Lankan conflict. It is instructive to compare the letter from Invercargill with the magazine story; there are enough discrepancies to cast doubt on the whole letter. The other point I wish to draw to your readers’ attention is that the anti-Tamil letter appears plumb in the middle of the visit to New Zealand of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner, normally resident in Canberra.—Yours, etc., JOHN BENSON. Petone, June 10, 1986.
