Pass load heaviest

The road over Evans Pass shuddered with the weight of this 200-tonne load of Commetto transport trailer and wool press, which was pulled by two trucks from Lyttelton to Sockburn yesterday. Freightways Road Canterbury transported the 110-tonne wool press, which had been shipped from Auckland to Wellington, to Christchurch Wool Dumpers. The press will be used to compress high-density bales of wool.

The load was possibly the heaviest to be carried over the pass, said the operations manager for Freightways, Mr Peter Fletcher. The previous heaviest load was about 96 tonnes. The Commetto pulling trailer has 124 wheels

and is 18 metres long. When pulled by the twotractor truck units, the combined horsepower is 750.

In spite of the cumbersome load, the trucks had no problem negotiating the pass and a potentially tricky hairpin corner, said Mr Fletcher. The trucks took a long four-hour route through Christchurch to avoid bridges. The 4.5 metre high load was too high to go through the Lyttelton Tunnel.
