Scots troop home

NZPA-PA Glasgow Scotland’s dejected and defeated World Cup squad flew home to Glasgow yesterday, without its manager, Alex Ferguson, and the retiring captain, Graeme Souness. They had both left the flight from Mexico at Gatwick — Ferguson to travel directly to his Aberdeen home and Souness en route for Majorca. Souness, aged 33, who was dropped for Scotland’s crucial third game against Uruguay, has announced that he is to quit international football. He said he wants to devote more time to his family and to his new job as manager of Glasgow Rangers.

As the rest of the Scotland squad left the plane

in Glasgow several members acknowledged their disappointment at being unable to win the bonecrunching game against Uruguay which ended in a goal-less draw. The Dundee United striker, Paul Sturrock, commented: “In the Uruguay game, the cameras could not show all that was going on away from the ball.” “You were just walking around expecting any minute that someone else would have a go at you.” The Rangers wing, Davie Cooper, said of the Uruguayans: “They completely ruined the game. It wasn’t a spectator sport I hope Argentina gives them a taste of what they gave us.”
