Uruguayans make appeal
NZPA-Reuter Toluca Uruguay has appealed against the sanctions imposed by FIFA, after the violent first round match against Scotland. Eugenio Figueredo, an official spokesman for the Uruguayan delegation, said the appeal was officially put to the World Cup organising committee. Uruguay was threatened with expulsion from the World Cup finals if there was a repeat of the behaviour of players and officials during and after the 0-0 draw with Scot-
land. The Uruguayan federation was fined about $25,200 and its coach, Omar Barras, was banned from the bench for the second round game against Argentina today. “Uruguay is not a country noted for acts of violence linked to soccer, such as fires and vandalism, as happened in other World Cups,” Figueredo said. "However FIFA never threatened anyone with expulsion from the tournament for these,” he added.
