Cycling to Belgian

NZPA-Reuter Sete, France Belgium’s Claude Criquielion won the Midi Libre cycling race yesterday, storming ahead in the 160 km fourth and final stage. Criquielion, who also won the second stage of the race, was 23s ahead of secondplaced Jean-Rene Bemaudeau of France in the over-all standings. Third over all was Spain’s Pello Ruiz-Cabestany, the winner of the previous .day’s stage.

Yesterday’s stage — and the result of the race — was decided on the steep slopes of Mont Saint Clair just before the finish in the port of Sete. Bernaudeau, Criquielion and the Frenchman, Laurent Fignon, broke away from the pack during a steep ascent and it was in that order that the threesome crossed the finishing line the first time. But the Belgian powered ahead to take the lead the second time around, coming in 7s ahead of Bernaudeau and 14s in front of Fignon.
