NZPA Perth The high technology being employed in the battle for the America’s Cup off Perth’s port city of Fremantle has spilled over into the streets of the twin cities, in the form of Big Brother-style parking meters. With new computerlinked meters, parking inspectors will be able to watch a control screen at their headquarters and pinpoint an expired meter anywhere in Perth or Fremantle. Fifty of the meters have been installed in Perth streets and as well as their computer link to
11 base they will also tell P the inspector, when he a arrives to write out the s ticket, exactly how long ( it has been expired. ! But if the cities’ motor- * ists feel that the council ; is being unduly harsh, the city fathers have shown that they are not ’' without heart. > They have also instit tuted a system of 35 I computerised ticket I machines which allow i drivers who have had too much to drink, to take a ; ticket, leave the car i where it is, and collect it I by 11 a.m. the next day, > without penalty.
