Softball league
The proposed national softball league came a step closer to reality after the New Zealand Softball Association’s council meeting at the week-end. During the meeting in Wellington on Saturday, the council endorsed the working committee’s plans for a 12-team league, and agreed that the proposal should go on to the annual meeting of the N.Z.S.A. on August 23.
The format for the national league, involving only men’s teams, is expected to receive the goahead from the annual meeting. The league, to begin in
February-March, 1987, would involve two clubs each from the Auckland, Wellington and Hutt Valley Associations. North Shore, Counties, Waikato, Hawke’s Bay, Canterbury and Southland would each have one team in the league.
It was also announced at the N.Z.S.A. council meeting that Chubb Tangaroa (Manawatu) and Debbie Mygind (Auckland) were the New Zealand “players of the year” for the 1985-86 season. Tangaroa is a former Bumside and Canterbury pitcher.
