Inspector wins top prize
PA Wellington A Wellington police inspector, Mr Owen Dance, has won first prize in the 1985 Queen’s Police Gold Medal essay competition, which is open to all police in the Commonwealth. Mr Dance, aged 37, wrote of the need for police to take a higher profile in relations with the news media.
“We cannot be quiet even if we want to because the media take such an interest in us,” he said. “We should not be quiet anyway because we are accountable to the public.”
The prize of £3OO ($850) will be presented to Mr Dance by the Gov-ernor-General, Sir Paul Reeves. Mr Dance said he was surprised at his success as the essay had been prepared in a bit of a rush. “I was amazed, absolutely thunderstruck when the commissioner rang to tell me,” he said.
