The big ‘smoke free week’

“Knot on your life” will be a catch-phase around the country soon as “The Great New Zealand Smoke Free Week,” from June 30 to July 6, approaches. Civic ceremonies and school community activities will be on during the week, which is aimed at helping intending nonsmokers to give up and to promote the benefits of non-smoking among young people. The philosophy behind the nation-wide programme, a first for the country, is that smokers are nice people — they should not be “hassled,” but just encouraged to give up. Children throughout the country are being asked to “adopt” a smoker to help through the process of giving up and perhaps giving up something — chocolate, for example, in sympathy, with money that would have been spent on tobacco (and chocolate) going to a local charity. Chemists will carry forms for donations and pledges and will also sell “non-smokers’ survival kits.” More on Smoke Free Week next week.
