Olympic windfall

PA Wellington New Zealand sportsmen and women could benefit from an unexpected gift of $20,000 which the New Zealand Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association may receive from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

A recent announcement from Los Angeles said the surplus from the Olympics was to be divided among the participating nations. The money was originally to come with conditions specifying it must be spent in the United States, either to buy specialist equipment, to finance travel for American coaches or administrators to other countries, or for facilities in the United States to be used by visiting sportsmen and women. The N.Z.O.C.G.A. secretary, Tay Wilson, said the United States Olympic Committee had since modified the conditions to allow the money to be used for any “genuine sporting purpose.” Mr Wilson said the New Zealand committee would make up an invoice showing what money it received would be used for. The main concern of the American committee was that the money would not be used by various countries to repay Governments who might have supported teams in getting to Los Angeles.
