Mandela tips ’86 liberation

NZPA-Reuter Soweto The nationalist leader, Winnie Mandela, said yesterday that South Africa’s black majority would free themselves from white rule this year and hinted that violence might be used to achieve it.

Mrs Mandela, on a speaking tour of three black townships near Johannesburg, told a cheering crowd: “Together, hand-in-hand with our sticks of matches, with our necklaces we shall liberate this country.”

The necklace is the nickname for a gruesome method of killing used repeatedly by rioters

since black anti-apartheid violence began more than two years ago. A petrolsoaked tyre is placed around the neck of a victim and set alight. It has been used so far on blacks suspected of collaborating with the white authorities.

Mrs Mandela, wife of the jailed nationalist leader, Nelson Mandela, said: “We have reached a very serious stage in our struggle. The time for speeches and debate has come to an end.

“1986 is going to see the liberation of the oppressed (black) masses of this country.”
