Student leader on visit to Chch

The general vice-presi-dent of the New Zealand Universities Students’ Association, Ms Janet Cole, is in Christchurch this week to discuss student issues at Lincoln College and Canterbury University.

Ms Cole will focus on recommendations put forward by the association on the bursary review, called by the Minister of Education, Mr Marshall.

The recommendations had been “basically dismissed” by Mr Marshall, she said, and the association was working towards getting them adopted. “We are trying to show we are not just asking for more money; rather it is a redistribution of present funds,” she said.

The association has recommended that the basic bursary and accommodation allowance, now $7O, be set at $ll5. “This is based on what students pay for rent and living expenses. We also want to widen the criteria for the hardship allowance,” she said. “If these measures were implemented they would increase access to universities.” Ms Cole will hold a forum at the University of Canterbury to discuss the bursary review. She will also work with groups set up to deal with sexual harassment on campus and take part in antiracism workshops.
