N.Z. golf lead shared

PA Wellington Kim McDonald, of New Zealand, and the titleholder, Gerry Power, of Australia, were tied for the lead after the first round of the New Zealand amateur golf championship at the Hutt course yesterday. Power and McDonald carded 69s and were the only players to break the par of 70.

Poised behind them were six players, including the Australian, Jon Evans, joint winner of the national foursomes title on Sunday with Stephen Taylor. A fellow Australian, Ray Picker, who showed his

potential with a devastating round on the first day of the Sloan Morpeth Trophy against New Zealand last Friday, has also carded a 70 along with Phil Aickin (Whitford Park), Mathew Lane (Shandon), Steve Morshuis (Tairei) and Geoff Stephen (Titirangi). McDonald, a long-standing member of the Otago Government Life (formerly Freyberg) tournament team, has not won the the amateur title but has been consistent in top competition. He said it was always good to get a good start but things

didn’t always go his way. He took six shots on the par four

eighth hole. His fellow Otago representative, Steve Morshuis, carded his 70 in spite of going out of bounds on the eleventh hole, a par-five. The best of the New Zealand players from the weekend’s Sloan Morpeth trophy competition were Michael Barirop and Brent Paterson, each with a 74, while Owen

Kendall, McDonald’s partner in Sunday’s foursomes, carded a disappointing 78. North Shore’s Terry Cochrane, another leading chance, carded a 75. The second round will be played today.

Leading scores were.— 69— G. Power (Australia), K. McDonald (St Clair). 70— J. Evans (Australia), R. Picker (Australia), P. Aickin (Whitford Park), M. Lane (Shandon), S. Morshuis (Taieri), G. Stephens (Titirangi). 71 — C. Taylor (Hamilton), M. Street (Harewood), B. Lincoln (Australia), a: Rose (Miramar), S. Thompson (Hokitika). 72— S. Taylor (Australia), B. King (Australia), M. Sammuels (Australia), R. Borren (Hutt), G. Steigmierer (Remuera), J. Oliver (Shandon).
