Shipping news Soviet potash arrives

Potash from the Soviet Union has arrived at Lyttelton in a near-new cargo vessel.

The 4200 tonnes of potash is bound for the Ravensdown Fertiliser Co-operative, Ltd, at Hornby.

It was carried to New Zealand by the 4356-ton Malden Gloria, which is registered in Panama and has a Filipino crew.

She previously unloaded about 1300 tonnes of potash at Nelson and then sailed for Lyttelton, arriving on Sunday. She will unload her cargo until Thursday, when she is due to sail for Australia.

The Maiden Gloria, a tidylooking vessel, was built last year and is on her forth voyage, according to a spokesman for her agent, N.Z.P.C.

The spokesman said that New Zealand had received previous shipments of potash from the Soviet Union and also imported it from the United States and Europe. “The funny thing is that the potash from Russia is red, but the potash from the United States is white,” said the spokesman.
