Concern for image

PA Dunedin Laurie Mains, a 1976 All Black in South Africa, said yesterday he respected the right of the New Zealand rugby players who have gone to South Africa, but was concerned about the effect the tour may have on the image of the game.

The Otago representative coach said he could sympathise with the attitude of the players, but considered the tour was not in the interests of New Zealand rugby.

“I respect the right of the players to make the tour, and I can understand their being so keen

to go after the manner in which the tour was cancelled last year,” he said.

“But I am not sure that what they have done is in the best interests of rugby.”
