Mothers’ Union centenary
Mothers’ Union, now incorporated into the Association of Anglican Women, will celebrate its centenary this week. The New Zealand branch of the Mothers’ Union is the first to celebrate its centenary outside England. It was formed when a small group of Anglican women gathered in Avonside in 1886 and became part of the association in 1970. Diocesan celebrations will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday. A tree planting ceremony will be held at Holy Trinity Church, Avonside, on Tuesday at 4 p.m. The New Zealand president,
Mrs Aitken, and the British president, Mrs Hazel Treadgrove, will be present. On Wednesday a church service will be held at the Cathedral, with Mrs Treadgrove as speaker. Avonside members have been asked to wear late eighteenth century costume and banners from each parish will be presented. Floral arrangements by each parish will be on display. A commemorative pictorial datestamp will also be issued from the Christchurch Central - Post Office on Wednesday. Avonside parish activities will be held on November 1 to 9.
