Rate increases

Sir, — Saving hard to buy a home is the usual procedure for most people and trying to provide for oneself when old is another. Paying rates is becoming a very difficult burden for most people. Rates keep increasing each year. Why cannot the councils budget and economise, just as we have to. The Christchurch City Council should spend its savings (investments courtesy of the M.E.D.) before asking for more in rates. Unnecessary expenditure such as “beautifying” Victoria Square, which would destroy its old time charm just to satisfy modern developers, should be stopped. It is about time the council listened to Cr Vicki Buck. At least she has questioned the need for rate rises. — Yours, etc., L. J. DAVEY. February 18, 1986.
