Television New Zealand will broadcast five events during the three-week New Zealand , International Festival of the Arts to be held in Wellington next month. o As well as covering the opening gala concert with Dame Joan Sutherland and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in the Michael Fowler Centre on March 5, TVNZ plans to record Joan Sutherland’s town hall recital with the pianist Richard Bonynge and the two concerts to be given by the Berlin Staatskapelle. The Benson and Hedges Design Awards will also be televised.

TVNZ will also cover the Festival cavalcade and give a backgrounder on visiting artists and performers as part of a national telecast on March 5. It will record festival events and interview guest artists in daily news and current affairs programmes. Festival performers will also feature on Catherine Saunders' “Tonight” show, afternoon live interviews, and in the new “On Line” talkback news programme scheduled to begin on March 3. The first "Kaleidoscope” programme of the year will feature the festival, as seen through the eyes of the director, Michael Maxwell.
