MARLBOROUGH CATCHMENT BOARD and REGIONAL WATER BOARD DISPLAY at KAIKOURA A & P SHOW 1986 Some of the Marlborough Catchment Board’s and Regional Water Board’s achievements since It arrived In Kaikoura 20 years ago are Illustrated in a series of displays at this years Show. The Board's major concern in 1966 was the preparation of a scheme to cope with the problems created by the Kowhal River and the Mt Fyffe Streams. The Kaikoura Scheme Is now, 70% complete and photographs of river works "before and after” show the progress made. Coastal erosion is also a concern of the Board and where this occurs at the mouth of Lyeli Creek, important to Kaikoura town. Little reliable data was available In 1966 on which to design engineering works and that shortfall Is being made up with records of rainfall and steam flow In some cases telemetered dally direct to the board’s computer in Blenheim. A statutory role of Regional Water Boards Is the control of water use by the issuing of water rights. The location and type of water rights on the Kiakoura Flat Is shown on a map displayed. A photographic display of current soil conservation practices In the Kaikoura area shows how important is the use of vegetation to control soil erosion. Gullies and slips are prevented with the help of willows and poplars, eucalypts and pine trees, not to mention the native bush itself.
