No pleas were entered by Robert Thomas Francis Crimp, aged 21, and Brent William Pool, aged 27, both unemployed. In addition to the joint charge of attempting to murder Leslie O’Brien, the two defendants are also charged with the unlawful possession of a knife in Cathedral Square. Counsel for both men, Mr Emo Bedo, in seeking a week’s.remand, said no application for bail would be made “at this time.” Detective Sergeant Norman Scott submitted a medical report to the Judge in respect of Crimp and asked that he un-

dergo a psychiatric assessment. Mr Bedo said his client did not want to be examined at this stage and asked that such an application be held over until February 27. During their brief, seperate appearances in the dock both defendants were handcuffed. The victim, said to have been stabbed repeatedly in the chest and stomach, is reported to be in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital’s in-tensive-care unit. PERIODIC DETENTION Periodic detention for four months to be served concurrently with supervision for two years, was on a man, aged 19, earlier convicted on five charges of indecency involving young girls. the period under supervision, the defendant, aged 19, was ordered to take pyschiatric counselling and/or treatment, said the Judge.

In normal circumstances a prison term would be the appropriate sentence, he said but in view of matters contained in the psychiatric and probation reports, he would deal with the matter short of a custodial sentence. An order was made granting final suppression of the name of the defendant, who was represented by Mr K. J. Grave. The offences, which were admitted, occurred between January 1 and December 22 last year. DRUG CHARGES Kim Hugh ShawWilliams, who faces charges of possessing can.nabis for sale or supply, for supply, and cultivating the drug, was remanded without plea, to February 27. The police say the three alleged offences occurred on February 18. The defendant was allowed bail of $750.
