Flying Count looks well placed in Ashburton feature

By

G. K. YULE

Few pacers in the intermediate classes this season have shown the staying potential of the former Southland-trained five-year-old, Flying Count, which looks favourably placed on 10m in the Grain and Seed Merchants Handicap at the Ashburton Trotting Club’s meeting tomorrow. He started the season with a win in September and since then he has been placed over varying distances in six of his eight appearances.

He joined Richard Bros-

nan’s team at Kerrytown some weeks ago and at his first attempt for him he was a respectable sixth to Chipaluck in the Timaru Cup. Four days later at Addington he came on steadily from midfield for second to the same horse at the end of 3200 m won in 4min 10.95. A five-year-old by Flying Lord, Flying Count is usually a safe beginner and he looks the type capable of forcing a strong pace should the race develop into a stopgo affair over the opening 1600 m. The Westport-owned

mare, Jovial Jan, has been shaping like an early winner lately, her three most recent starts being improvement on some of her other efforts this season. She came fast for a respectable fourth in the Nelson Cup, and was unlucky over 2400 m two days later. Then she finished boldly for third to the talented Steven John in the Marlborough Cup. She was not in contention in the mile race won by Quiet Touch on February 12, but she should be harder to beat on her

return to ordinary handicap racing. It might be best to disregard the latest effort of Rotary Motor. A better lead could be his fourth to Chipaluck over this distance on January 22. He is an impressive type of four-year-old by Lordship and looks capable of a fast time over 3200 m. There are few better stayers about than Timandra, which has paced some of her best races on the Ashburton track. She could be the pick of the others on the front, although a big run from Travel Warrant would not

be a complete surprise. He has marred some of his racing with tardy beginnings and his form background is rather bleak. However, he has had sufficient racing to bring him to a high peak of fitness and he only has to begin smoothly to offer more than token opposition to the popular fancies. Aran Blaze, Coastal Trader and Bobanish share the 20m mark. All have raced well enough to get into the finish, particularly Aran Blaze, a fine third to Smarty Pants over one mile last Satur-

day. This race should suit her even better. Smarty Pants has struck a royal patch of form lately, particularly over sprint distances. Her performances suggest that even from 30m she could make another big showing. Buster Bret, Embark and Sunset Panorama appear to dominate the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Newlands Exide Pace, a mobile-start event over 2400 m. Laudit, First Encounter and Go Duke are others expected to add interest to the finish.
