National Party leadership

Sir,—Without an effective upper House of Parliament, it is the people’s democratic right to have an opposition worthy of its name. The present one is letting too many incidents and bunglings of the Government slip through with hardly a whimper. Unfortunately they are preoccupied with internal wrangling, so seem not to rise to the occasion. Since the days of the first Labour Government I have known and heard through the grapevine who has the makings of a good Prime Minister or leader of his party. I consider Mr Jim .Bolger has these qualities and when the National Party caucus choose him as their-leader they will have picked a winner. He, with Sir Robert Muldoon and other experienced National members of Parliament, would keep the Labour Government on its defence and its toes. By failing to make the necessary reorganisation, National could languish for many years on the Opposition benches.—Yours, etc., E. L. ROSS. February 14, 1986.
