‘Guardian’ control

PA Greymouth A West Coast syndicate headed by a Hokitika businessman, Mr Bruce Smith, has purchased a controlling interest in the Guardian and Times Company, Ltd, publishers of the “Hokitika Guardian” newspaper.

Mr Smith said his group now held a 51 per cent shareholding in the company.

The long-time editormanager, Mr Ross King, who was the company’s largest single shareholder,

has sold his shares to the syndicate and is to retire on March 31.

“We have appointed a manager-designate, Mr Ken Read, who is being trained under Mr King,” Mr Smith said.

"Our main interest in buying into the paper was to ensure that it continued to publish,” Mr Smith said. “I was in Westport when the paper there ceased publication for a time and it certainly had a negative effect on the town.”
