New Zealand’s defence

Sir,—On my second visit to your country, I read that New Zealanders are to be asked what sort of defence force they want. I do not envy them when the only perceivable threat is a nuclear holocaust against which there is probably no defence. How can anyone say what the world will be like in 20, 30, or 50 years? We can hope that Russia and the United States will have resolved their differences. This would certainly be a cause for rejoicing, but could put small countries like Australia and New Zealand up for grabs again. If some new threat developed it would come from the north, and Australia would be the first to go. While we all hope it never happens, you may eventually need a defence force capable of repelling an attack launched from what was once Australian soil. And if it comes, you can be sure they won’t be bowling underarm. — Yours, etc., R. BAHNSEN. Glenalta, South Australia, February 10, 1986.
