Towards A.S.E.A.N.

Sir, —The article, “Soviet Union woos A.S.E.A.N.” (February 13) reinforces my suggestion that Australia and New Zealand move from A.N.Z.U.S. towards A.S.E.A.N., with the possible addition of India. This would go far to soothe Australia’s fears that the teeming millions of Asia, especially Indonesia, might come down to populate its great, empty spaces. The obstacle is the Vietnam occupation of Kampuchea, but if the Soviet Union can persuade its Vietnamese ally to make a settlement, A.S.E.A.N. could be economically linked with the small south and southwest Pacific countries. America is already A.S.E.A.N.’s chief backer and both Russia and China would be interested in increasing trade with the region. Inter-Power rivalry would guarantee the region’s neutrality, and its inhabitants, like those of the E.E.C., would enjoy a bright economic future. New Zealand especially would have a much handier market for its produce among the wealthier groups in those countries.—Yours, etc., VERNON WILKINSON. February 7, 1986.
