New chief of military
NZPA-Reuter Manila Lieutenant General Fidel Ramos has taken over as Acting Chief of the Philippine Armed Forces. The Presidential Palace said that General Fabian Ver, whose resignation was announced on Sunday by the President, Mr Ferdinand Marcos, would stay on until March 1 to “wind up his official affairs and say goodbye to units in the field.” Mr Marcos said he had
accepted the resignation of General Ver, aged 66, a cousin and close confidant, and that General Ramos, also a relative, would take over as acting chief. General Ver was cleared in December of a role in the August 1983 killing of the opposition leader, Benigno Aquino. The United States viewed his replacement as military chief as an Important first step in reforming the Armed Forces.
