Overtime dispute could hit talks

Killing will resume at freezing works in Canterbury today except at the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works at Belfast. While shift engineers were striking during the last seven days, the 46 tradesmen at the works had all overtime suspended. They told the management that before they would resume overtime they wanted to be paid overtime for the last seven days, and travel time.

The company’s assistant

general manager, processing, Mr Dick Allan, said last evening that the tradesmen had been suspended at 4.30 p.m. yesterday when they refused to work overtime. Mr Allan said that the ban on overtime could jeopardise the meeting on Friday between companies and meat industry unions to discuss wage claims and the state of the industry. The companies had agreed to go to the meeting only if industrial action was withdrawn.
