German driver signs

NZPA-Reuter Bonn West Germany, robbed of both its Formula One motor racing drivers after tragic accidents last year, will still have a starter on the grid for this season’s Grand Prix championship. Christian Danner, the European Formula 3000 champion, has signed for the Italian team, Osella, where he joins a young Italian driver, Ivan Capelli.

The move was announced by the West German motor firm, BMW, which provides turbo engines for Osella.

Danner raced in two Grands Prix last season for the West German team, Zakspeed, as a replacement for the British driver, Jonathan Palmer, who was injured.

Manfred Winkelhock, who drove for RAM, and Stefan Bellof, of Tyrrell, were killed in crashes during Endurance races last year in Mosport, Canada, and Spa, Belgium, respectively.
