With Wall Street closed for George Washington’s birthday and lacklustre trading in London, there was little overseas influence on the local market.

An initial enthusiastic reaction for Bell Resources’ revised bid for BHP saw BHP rise 12c to 714 in early trading. The shares had eased back by the close to be 2c down at 700 on turnover of 1.2 M.

Bell Resources remained steady on 480, its parent, the Bell Group, put on 4c to 664 and CSR added 3c to 336.

Mining stocks were mixed with MIM losing 8c to 247, Peko 4c to 516 and Niugini Mining 7c to 178. Comalco gained 7c to 195, Western Mining 4c to 342 and Kidston 20c to 540. Oil and gas stocks were easier on balance. Santos fell 7c to 447, Bridge Oil 5c to 180 and Weeks Petroleum 30c to 820 while Magellan put on 5c to 175 and Ampol Exploration 3c to 188.

Strong trading in EldersIXL dominated the industrial boards with about 2.7 M shares crossed, the bulk of them in special sales at 330. The shares closed 2c up at 332.

Elsewhere, FAI dropped 26c to 604, Pioneer Concrete 5c to 260, ACI 10c to 310 and Unity Corp, which plans to take over APA Holdings, shed 20c to 530. Fairfax put on 10c to 790, Pacific Dunlop 8c to 278 and Bond Corp 10c to 248.

Major banking stocks traded in a narrow range, with the National Bank firming 2c to 465 and Westpac and the ANZ both remaining steady on 455 and 472 respectively.

Turnover was 549.5 M shares worth 572.4 M, with falls outnumbering rises by 251 to 207. In share price index futures, active March opened one point firmer at 1053.0 and traded down to close at 1045.0.
