70 crew fly home

PA Wellington Seventy of the 330 Russian crew aboard the Mikhail Lermontov flew out of New Zealand yesterday and the rest would leave as soon as possible, the New Zealand agent for the Baltic Shipping Company said yesterday. A spokesman for Geo. Scales, Ltd, Mr Michael Chin, said the 70 flew out of Wellington at 7.30 a.m. and out of Auckland later in the morning aboard an Air New Zealand flight to Singapore. They would leave Singapore on an Aeroflot flight, he said. Their colleagues would leave as soon as there were seats available on flights back to the Soviet Union. The British and Australian crew members employed by the ship’s charterer flew out yesterday with passengers.
