Cafeteria workers take action

Industrial cafeterias were the worst affected by industrial action by tearooms, restaurant and cafeteria workers in Christchurch yesterday. The workers are taking sporadic and impromptu action of varying type and duration in protest against the breakdown in their award talks last week. The secretary of the Canterbury Hotel Workers’ Union, Mr Martin Moodie, said that the action was likely to build , up during the week, and., during the busy period from Thursday to Saturday, licensed and 8.Y.0. restaurants would be subjected to industrial action, he said. By late yesterday workers in 20 establishments were taking action of some form Mr Moodie said that the management of seven establishments had signed contracts to pay the $6 an hour basic wage claim being sought by the union. They would be exempt from any action while the dispute continued. -

It is the first time in the union’s history that this group of workers has taken united industrial action.
