Child scheme proves popular

An after-school programme for primary school pupils, run by the Riccarton Borough Council, has been more popular than was expected.

The Wharenui afterschool programme began two weeks ago, and already 30 children have enrolled. It is run at Wharenui School every weekday between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

The Riccarton Borough's community affairs officer, Ms Susan Hodder, said the programme was suggested by the Riccarton Community Liaison Group last year. “They were concerned about children loitering in the streets,” Ms Hodder said. “There is a general concern about children returning to empty homes.” £ The Social Welfare Department had made a $2OOO grant to the programme. Entertainment has been provided for the children one day each week at Riccarton Mall.

Several parents also were helping supervise the programme, said Ms Hodder. More money was needed to put a toilet and storeroom in the prefabricated building used as a base, and to help pay the volunteers’ expenses.
