Gene Evander fancied at Auckland

Special correspondent Auckland The remarkably consistent Cambridge seven-year-old, Gene Evander, looks sure to again give a good account of himself when he contests the main race at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park this evening. Gene Evander has had 12 starts this season and he had not finished further back than fifth. One of his three fifths came after his relegation from second place. His other races have produced one win, three seconds, two thirds and three fourths. Most of Gene Evander’s starts this season have been in stronger company than he wil meet in the Harvey Furnishings Pace and his

handicap of 20m is not as difficult as it may appear. None of the three horses on the front mark has shown any worthwhile form for some considerable time, although it must be said that some have not done much racing this season. An improved showing by Kentucky Prince, in particular, would come as no real surprise. Even so, Gene Evander looks the one to beat. He is usually a fast beginner and should be handily placed before going very far. Pixanover, which is also on 20m, and Barbara Jover (No. 10) will be heavily backed. Pixanover has not raced since he finished second to Master Mood in the Wellington Cup at Hutt

Park on January 15 but he showed his fitness with a bold run at a matinee meeting at Alexandra Park last Wednesday. Barbara Jover was a close second off 20m at Alexandra Park last Saturday. She is better placed this time. Skipper Vantar, which beat Barbara Jover last week, is 10m worse off but he is a smart sprinter and must be strongly considered. The fine three-year-old, Alba’s reign is bound to be a warm favourite in the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Courier Systems Mobile Pace. He has drawn awkwardly — on the outside in the front row — and he has not raced since December 7, but his class should carry him through.
