Scenic rail trip
Rail buffs, outdoor .lovers and picnickers are well served by the scenic railway which runs for 15 kilometres ~ between Waipara and the Waikarl Road crossing. Two trains run up the line on the first Sunday of every month and are available for charter when required by any interested group. The scenic railway is the work of the Weka Pass Railway Society which has 200 members interested in keeping the old Waiau branch line “alive.”
A spokesman for the society, Mr Ken Parker, said the journey up the line was very picturesque, especially in autumn. The train stops for 20 minutes at Herbert’s Crossing for a tearoom stop and for another hour on the return journey for people to picnic, walk, or just bask in the sun.
Two diesel locomotivesmake the trips which begin at 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m. and depart opposite the Waipara railway station.
Adults are charged $5 for the return journey, children $2.50 and families $l5. The society hopes to restore a steam engine during the next 18 months and is always upgrading rolling stock and the line. All train drivers are trained to professional standards.
