Drugs cause concern

NZPA-AP New York Mary Decker Slaney, the world’s top women’s middle distance runner, says use of illegal drugs is track and field’s most immediate pressing problem and the organisation of the 1988 Seoul Olympics is the sport’s most important problem of the future. “The drug problem is the most serious concern in the sport now, because there is not any way to stop it,” Slaney said, referring to anabolic steriods and other drugs on the banned list of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, the world governing body for the sport.

“I would like to see permanent bans,” she said. “I thought lifetime meant lifetime, but it has turned out to be 18 months. I would like to see lifetime really be enforced.”

As for the 1988 Olympics, Slaney said she was concerned about the organisation for track and field after a distasteful experience last September 14 at Seoul, where she completed her undefeated, 14-race outdoor season.

“They do not know how to organise,” she said.
