Thief described
The police believe they have an accurate description of the man who robbed the Westpac Bank at Richmond, near Nelson, on Monday.
The man threatened staff with a sawn-off rifle and escaped on a trail bike with 336,000.
After wide publicity that the man had been in the Aniseed Valley soon after the robbery, two women came forward with a description of a man they saw on two occasions riding a black trail bike in the valley.
They saw the man’s face, without the helmet worn when the bank was robbed, on the day before the robbery and on the day of the robbery. An identikit expert at Nelson on Thursday drew a sketch as a result of the women’s description. The Nelson C.I.D. chief, Detective Sergeant Roy Powell, believes the sketch is accurate. The women described the
man as being quite tall — between 1.829 m (6ft) and I.BBom (6ft 2in). His hair was dark brown and reached below the collar at the back. The money he took was put into a bright red backpack, of the type used by students. Anybody who can name the man is asked to get in touch with the nearest police station.
