Aust, surge levels off

NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed barely steady yesterday as profit-taking in industrial stocks counter-acted gains in mining and gold stocks. Near the close of trading, the all-ordinaries index had risen 0.2 points to 1044.1, the all-industnals had fallen 2.3 points to 1538.1 and the allresources index had gained 1.9 points to 662.4. The gold index rose 20.9 points to 957.5. Turnover was 51.4 M shares worth JAust.B4.4M, rises outnumbering falls, 103 to 56. The highlight of the day’s trading was a special sale in Melbourne of 800,000 BHP shares at 900, well above the market price. The market leader closed 2c lower at 888. CSR closed steady at 373 and Bell Resources lost 8c to 580.

The mining sector was firm, though many stocks retreated from strong early gains by the close. CRA added 4c to 588, .Western Mining 3c to 355, North Broken Hill 3c to 245, and MIM 2c to 290. Gold related stocks again finished well up though there were some losses. GMK added 30c to 900, and Poseidon and Whim Creek 5c each to 290 and 260. Kidston shed 10c to 550. Oil and gas stocks traded mixed with Santos down 2c to 544 and Magellan down 10c to 230. Ampol Exploration and Bridge Oil both added 5c to 265 and 220 respectively. On the industrial board, lEL shed 34c to 690 while AGL gained 10c to 580. About I.IM Pioneer Concrete shares were traded and the stock remained steady at 270.
