Meningitis toll rises
PA Auckland A sixth person has died of meningococcal meningitis in South Auckland since July. A four-month-old Mangere boy died in Auckland Hospital on Monday, said the South Auckland medical officer of health, Dr Allan Cowan, yesterday. “It is a disease which seems to be in the community all the time at a low level,” he said. “But in the last six months we have had quite a substantial outbreak. It peaked in September but , now seems to be dwindling.” Dr Cowan said that, apart from military cases, the latest outbreak was the biggest in New Zealand.
Between March and November, 93 cases were reported throughout New Zealand, including 44 in South Auckland, he said.
