Get ready for the fun ride
A cycling event that is fun yet reasonably challenging for all ages, has been organised by “The Press,” for the past six years. It is run in association with the Canterbury Cyclists’ Association. This year, the Fun Ride will be held on Sunday, February 16, over three optional courses of 40km, 60km, and 100 km. As in other years, the courses are designed to give cyclists of all ages and abilities a chance to compete. Those who complete the nominated course within the time limit will receive a. certificate. Prizes will be given to the oldest, the youngest, and the last to finish within the time limit. Morrison Industries is giving two cycles as prizes. The winners will be drawn from the entries at the approximate finishing time of 4 p.m. The winners will be announced at the Summer Times’ Peace and People’s Day in Hagley Park. No-one will a
prize for being first. Greater interest is now being shown in triathlons, such as the Coast to Coast and Fun Runs, so there has been a demand for some participants to have finishing times on their certificates. But riders’ times will not be recorded because it is hoped that people will take their time, and perhaps stop for lunch or a swim. Further weekly guides will appear in “Shaping Up” on how to. get fit, the correct way to ride your cycle, and what precautions should be taken. Entry fees are ?2 a person or ?4 a family. Funds raised from previous Fun Rides have gone towards costs of the Canterbury Cyclists’ Association’s “Cycle Tour Guide of the South Island,” and “A Cycle Guide to Christchurch and Environs.” This year’s funds will go towards revising and reprinting another edition of the South Island guide. -By BRYCE SIMS, of “The Press.”
