N.Z. clean sweep of cycling medals
PA Wanganui Steven Swart (Waikato) and Sue Golder (Auckland) set national records as New Zealand made a clean sweep of all nine medals at stake in the individual pursuit at the 1986 Oceania cycling championships yesterday. Swart lowered his day-old senior 4000 metres record to 4min 45.48 s in dethroning the titleholder, Andre Whitford, in an all-Waikato final to the event. Golder, who the previous day established a women’s flying 200 m record during the sprint series, nibbled away at the national women’s pursuit record with a winning time of 4min 09.15 s in the 3000 metre final. To complete a trio of pursuit titles for the host country, Glen McLeay of Southland took the junior crown in 3min 45.41 s in an all South Island final.

Junior 3000 m individual pursuit, semi-finals: Jason Smith (N.Z.) 3m 52.66 s beat Scott McGorry (Aust.) 3min 54.925; Glen McLeay (N.Z.) beat Pierre Jordan (N.Z.) lapped for third place: Jordan 3min 51.64 s beat McGorry 3min 57.60 s for first and second place; McLeay 3min 45.41 s beat Smith 3min 48.505. Women’s 3000 m individual pursuit, semifinals: Kathryn Ragg (N.Z.) 4min 13.74 s beat Karen Erikson (N.Z.) 4min 14.405: Susan Golder (N.Z.) beat Donna Rae (Aust.) for third place. (Rae punctured inside the last 1000 m). Erikson 4min 14.90 s beat Rae 4min 17.41 s for first and second; Golder 4min 09.15 s (N.Z. record) beat Ragg 4min 18.265.
